Assumptions behind species conservation efforts

The assumptions involved in conservation play on our desire to avoid change and instability. There is also a sense of responsibility. In some ways it is the ultimate conservative act, a fear of the future, only sometimes linked to the survival of the human species, respect for other forms of life not at an individual level, but at a communal level. It is a essentially fear driven reaction to maintain that which we destroy, to try to keep the world the same, but ultimately we must come to terms that there is no stagnant situation even for species and that we have to learn to go forward and live in a changed world and not one which we thunk will remain the same. What this new world will be has to be decided but it cannot be the old one.
